Irene PARRY

Nee Cartwright of Handbridge, formerly of Boundary Lane, Saltney, died peacefully after a short illness age 96 years. She was the third eldest in a family of 11. She is still survived by her daughter Joy, grandchildren Nicola and James, great grandchildren Edward (Teddy) and Eric, sister Jean and brother Reg. Irene left school at the age of 14 and went into domestic service.

During the war she worked in the local aircraft factory. In 1948 she married Eric and they were happily married for 50 years. She worked as a turf accountant where she developed quick mental maths skills, which she never lost and in the early 1960’s joined Browns of Chester. She loved working there and after a few years became the buyer for the silverware and china departments not only for the Browns store but for stores throughout the country.

She enjoyed traveling to buy merchandise both in the UK and abroad and met famous people such as Diana, Princess of Wales, Margaret Thatcher and Ken Dodd. Following her retirement she volunteered for over 20 years at the Oxfam shop. Irene was a very sociable person, she loved being in company and having friends and family around her. She enjoyed foreign travel with Joy and day trips and holidays in the UK and abroad with her friends and the Debenham’s Pension Club.

Her family meant everything to her and she was especially proud of Nicola and James and their achievements. As a great grandma she became familiar with technology and enjoyed the video and phone calls from Teddy and Eric. With the onset of macular degeneration and poor mobility her independence was reduced but she still lived in her own home. Irene was very well supported by her wonderful neighbours and the carers from STONECARE.

We shall all miss her memories of the war, tales from her holidays, her days playing bowls with her friends and the reminiscences of being part of a large family. Our thanks go to the staff of Ward 48 who treated her with kindness and respect for the few days she was with them.
