Almost all of Cheshire’s Covid-19 cases are now the Delta variant

Ninety-three per cent of Cheshire’s Covid-19 cases are the Delta variant.

Latest figures reveal that all but six per cent of Cheshire’s coronavirus cases over the last two weeks have been the B.1.617.2 variant.

To find this out, we looked at data modelled by the Wellcome Sanger Institute with Public Health England.

TOP STORY: Cheshire areas where Covid is nearly gone despite Delta variant surge

The institute uses genome sequences to gain a better understanding of the biology of humans and pathogens.

An interactive map from the Institute shows genome sequencing results confirming one or more cases of the B.1.617.2 variant.

Data is calculated for the two weeks to June 5, 2021 and shows the areas with the highest proportion of the Indian variant.

  • Cheshire West and Chester: 98 per cent
  • Cheshire East: 90 per cent
  • Warrington: 95 per cent
  • Halton: 95 per cent

The percentages outlined above show what proportion of coronavirus cases in each local authority were the Indian variant.

Below are the number of coronavirus cases of all variants in Cheshire for the two weeks to June 5.

  • Cheshire West and Chester: 456
  • Cheshire East: 636
  • Warrington: 171
  • Halton: 57

Now that we have both sets of data, we can find out how many Delta variant cases make up the total number of cases for each borough.

Take a look below for the breakdown:

  • Cheshire West and Chester: 447
  • Cheshire East: 572
  • Warrington: 162
  • Halton: 54

Given the above, we can make the inference that between May 22 and June 5, Cheshire had 1,320 coronavirus cases, with 1,235 being the Indian variant, or around 93 per cent.

The latest figures come as the government is expected to announce ramped up Covid-19 measures in Cheshire.

Sources say Health Secretary Matt Hancock is expected to make an announcement on the new measures this afternoon (June 14).

It is understood that Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East will be the boroughs facing the new measures to curb rising coronavirus cases.
