M56 crash causes chaos as driver ‘admits falling asleep at the wheel’

A driver has ‘admitted to falling asleep at the wheel’ on the M56 in an incident that caused chaos for other motorists.

North West Motorway Police (NWMP) arrived at the scene of a road traffic collision on the M56 Westbound between Junction 14 and Junction 12 at around 10.40am this morning (August 25).

As a result of the incident, lane three was closed which led to delays of over an hour at one point.

According to traffic monitoring site, Inrix, traffic was released shortly just after 11am, but congestion remained in the area, with traffic also slow on the opposite side due to onlookers.

However, North West Motorway Police have now revealed that one driver has been reported for offences after ‘admitting to falling asleep at the wheel’.

Ina post on social media, the force also said it was ‘amazing’ that nobody was injured in the incident.

The full post read: “Following the RTC on the M56 J14 – J12, all lanes are now re-open & amazingly no one injured.

“One driver being reported for offences after admitting to falling asleep at the wheel.”

In a recent update, traffic monitoring site Inrix said delays remain in the area due to the earlier incident, but all lanes are now open.

The site said: “Long delays due to accident, now on the hard shoulder on M56 Westbound between J12 A557 ( Runcorn ) and J14 A5117 ( Chester Services/Helsby).

“Congestion to just before J11 (Preston Brook) traffic is also slow on the opposite side due to onlookers earlier.

“Delays can be seen through Frodsham along the A56 and Whitley along the A49 Tarporley Road as traffic avoids the motorway.

“All lanes have been re-opened. Travel time is around 45 minutes. Traffic released just after 11:00 after an accident in lane three (of three).”
