The clothing chain’s potential move was revealed after a planning application for new signs was submitted
Matalan looks set to open a new store on a retail park in Crewe, according to a planning application. The clothing chain’s potential move was revealed after a proposal was submitted for new signage on a vacant unit on Grant Junction Retail Park.
It would take over the former Harveys furniture store on the site. It has not been confirmed when Matalan aims to open the new store.
The planning application submitted by Sapphire Signs seeks advertising consent for five ‘internally LED illuminated flex face boxes complete with digitally printed flex face skins’. It also proposes one set of ‘3mm internally illuminated fret cut aluminium ‘goalpost’ trays with 80mm returns’.
Pictures have been submitted with the application confirming that Matalan would be the new tenant at the unit. The deadline for public comments on the application is June 30.
Matalan would join a number of fellow clothing retailers on Grand Junction Retail Park. This includes Next, Sports Direct and TK Maxx.
It is the latest big chain to choose to open a new store on the retail park instead of the town centre. M&S closed its store on Queensway in 2017 as it opened a premises on the retail park.
More recently, sports clothing retailer JD Sports also confirmed that it would be moving to the retail park from its unit in the town centre. A spokesperson said the firm would be moving to a ‘bigger store’ in the summer, believed to be the former Poundstretcher unit.
